Description

Use visual models along with the standard algorithm to quickly and effectively teach your students how to multiply decimals with this comprehensive resource pack.

Students will have a more hands-on approach to “see” what it looks like to multiply decimals by whole numbers and multiply decimals by decimals with models and the standard algorithm, as well as area models.  They will also be able to connect the visual models to the standard algorithm.  It’s great for kinesthetic learners as well as students that may struggle with memorizing algorithms.

This resource is complete, comprehensive, and easy to follow with a clear format.  It is low-prep and easy to assign to a sub and contains engaging activities.  If your students are struggling conceptually, this resource is for you!

This resource is included in a year-long 5th Grade Math Curriculum Bundle.

What You’ll Get:

  • 3 Complete Mini-Lessons:  Multiply Decimals by Whole Numbers, Multiply Decimals by Decimals, Multiply Decimals with Area Models
  • Task Cards for additional practice
  • Task Tents™ for Review
  • Quiz (2 versions - with and without area models)

What You’ll Get in EACH of the 3 mini-lessons:

  • Detailed Notes
  • Sample Problem
  • 2 practice pages *1 practice activity for the area models lesson*
  • Exit Tickets (7 Multiplying Decimals by Whole Numbers, 6 Multiplying Decimals by Decimals, 2 Area Models)
  • A “Create Your Own” Page

How Can You Use This?

Introduce each skill with the detailed set of notes and sample problem.  I suggest doing this in a whole group setting and pulling the PDF up on a Smartboard so students can annotate over the models.

Gradually release students to practice independently using the practice pages.  There are 2 provided (only 1 for the area models mini-lesson) as well as a “create your own” page.  This is great to provide to students who are fast finishers or understand the concept quickly.  They can create their own and switch their page with a friend and have them complete it.

When both skills have been taught, provide additional practice using the set of task cards.  Review both skills with the interactive Task Tents™ and assess mastery with the final quiz when you feel students are ready.

WHAT OTHER TEACHERS ARE SAYING…

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️  This is a great way to introduce multiplying decimals. It allows students to see the models for multiplying decimals, and then to move on to the area model when they are ready.  - RB Creations

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️  This was a great resource to use for my students. The models were great and really helped those students who struggled with how to multiply decimals. I enjoyed the different materials that were included in this resource!  - Casey F.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️  This has been an excellent resource for teaching multiplying with decimals (with models).  It is usually very hard to find enough practice using models, but this resource filled that missing piece. A great time-saver for me!  - Morgan N.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️  This resource is fantastic. The combination of anchor charts, practice, and task cards has been great practice for my kids. I have a group of advanced math students that typically jump straight to procedural fluency and miss some conceptual knowledge. The modeling examples and practice in this resource are well laid out and helped my kids conceptualize multiplication of decimals.   - Bethany C.
