Description

The teacher guide to Kwame Alexander's The Undefeated will utilize the text to explore the realities of the African American experience from the 1700s to contemporary times, through its powerful poetry and illustrations. The mentor text also serves, like many others in this series, as a fluid introduction into differences that students may or may not have experienced, offering natural opportunities for “mirrors and windows” through literature, as well as opportunities to connect with social justice concerns such as adversity, oppression, compassion, persistence, hope, and equality, The study will allow time for close reading, discussion of themes, exposure to historical figures and periods, lessons for narrative writing (including plot sequence, developing characters, problem and solution, descriptive details, and dialogue), as well as a step-by-step process that allows for whole group lessons, shared group work, and independent creativity in alignment with the standards for a grades 3-5 writing curriculum.

Using the lesson remotely:

1. A Google Slides component is available, which may be utilized in Google Classroom and virtual learning platforms.

2. Printable worksheets are included, and are available as an option for those students in need of at-home paper packets.
