What educators are saying

I got this as a resource to use with a friend's child but didn't end up needing to use it. It looks like it would definitely provide some good practice.
My students absolutely loved this challenge! Added a rocket ambience on my screen as they worked through it!

Description

Solving multi-step word problems in mission control will help save the rocket launch in this fun fourth grade math activity! In Operation Save the Rocket Launch, the mission control team is missing & it is up to your students to save the day. They answer a question involving a multi-step word problem including a multiplicative comparison to enter the room. Once inside, they must find the secret code name for the mission by answering multiple-choice questions in which they choose which equation will solve a word problem. *These equations include parentheses! For example, (150 - 28) ÷ 2 = b would be an equation that could be used to solve the problem, "The team started the season with 150 balls. 28 of the balls popped. Half of the remaining balls were lost." Finally, close reading skills will be required as students find a PIN number by solving three more story problems which require remainders to be interpreted. Please view the preview file and video to gauge the difficulty level & appropriateness for your students.

This is one of our quicker escape rooms. Some students will be able to complete this online breakout in 20 minutes, others will take closer to 45 minutes. Please allow for more time if students will be required to show their work on the included recording page. This particular online breakout focuses in on specific standard (Operations & Algebraic Thinking 4.OA.A.3) to provide teachers with the opportunity to provide enrichment, review, or assessment of these skills. Use it as a bell ringer, for early finishers, or when you find yourself with time to spare in your schedule. While we recommend our longer escape rooms to be completed in small groups, this multi-step word problem escape room is perfect for individual assessment or for working on with a partner. This online breakouts also make fun activities for math tutors to spice up their tutoring sessions!

Students will need a device and an internet connection to complete this worksheet alternative. It is easy to use both in class or for distance learning, virtual academies, homeschooling, or remote tutoring sessions.

FAQ

  • Do students need to have Gmail™ accounts? NO! Anyone with internet access and a tablet, computer, or even phone can complete the breakout.
  • How long will this take? That is the hardest question as the answer varies depending on each classroom, student, or group. Some students with a firm grasp on the concepts covered in this escape room will be able to complete the challenge very quickly (20 minutes), others will take longer. The majority of students will take between 25-45 minutes. Requiring students to use the recording form will increase the amount of time required to complete the puzzles. The form will not save student data, so if you are worried about your students not finishing on time, simply have them write their answers on scratch paper. They can then come back and quickly re-enter their answers and pick up where they left off.
  • Will students have to search the web to figure out the puzzles? NO! All of the information needed will be provided in the Google Form™. The math in this activity is all standards-based.
