========================

Let's face it, teaching problem solving skills can be difficult. :-) If your students are like mine, they sometimes don’t even know where to begin when solving multi-step word problems. I have created these multi-step problems with guided thinking questions that will hopefully help your students ‘train their brain’ in order to learn how to eventually solve multi-step problems on their own. The assignments transition from easier multi-step questions with guiding questions, to more difficult questions with guiding questions, to multi-step questions without questions. Once they get to the last ten problems, you should hopefully be able to simply pass them out and they would solve the problems on paper. Hopefully by the end, you can celebrate their improved problem solving skills!!

Feel free to use these word problems in your classroom however you see fit. Here are some possible ways to use them:

**use as a whole class every now and then

**use them as a progressive word problem unit

use them for differentiation, as there are different difficulty levels

**Use in a weekly math center

**Use one a week throughout the school year

**So many more uses

In my classroom, I would plan to use them every Monday as part of an intro lesson called “Multi-Step Mondays”. I will start off using problems1-10, one each week. Problems 1-10 are a tad easier than 11-20. The students will solve them and we will check it together as a class. We will progress through the problems doing one a week for 30 weeks. Once the kids have solved several of each level of each card, I feel they are suitable for a grade, especially when you get to cards 11-20.

It is my hope that these cards will help students ‘see’ and begin to understand the process in solving multi-step word problems, that you will be able to see huge improvements in their ability to problem solve. After all, solving multi-step word problems shouldn't be a MONSTER!

What are some benefits of using multi-step word problems?

There are many benefits to using word problems in the classroom. First, word problems help students grow their problem-solving skills. They have to figure out what the problem is asking, identify the critical information, and devise a plan to solve the problem. Accomplishing that is a skill they will use in all subjects, not just math.

Second, word problems help students develop critical thinking skills. They have to read the problem, figure out what is being asked, and then come up with an answer. This requires them to think about the problem and analyze it, a skill that will one day help them in college and their careers.

Finally, word problems help students develop math skills. This is a skill that they will use throughout their lives, and it is essential to start developing it early. They must understand the problem, identify the critical information, and use math skills to solve it.

Solve multistep word problems posed with whole numbers and having whole-number answers using the four operations, including problems in which remainders must be interpreted. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding.
