What educators are saying

This was a great resource to reinforce solving multi-step equations. I like that there were multiple versions of the puzzle as well.

Description

Looking for an engaging, no-prep activity to practice solving multi-step equations? Students will put together 16 puzzle pieces so that each problem is next to its answer in this fun digital and print activity.

There are 3 versions of the puzzle included. Level 1 has no extra problems or answers around the edges. Level 2 has extra problems and answers around the edges but gives the position of the starting piece. Level 3 has extra problems and answers around the edges and does not give the position of the starting piece. You can choose one to use or use all as differentiation. All versions have the same problems and the same solution.

The equations require distributing, combining like terms, or both to solve. They include fractional coefficients as well as both positive and negative numbers. Variables are on one side of the equation only. Please view the preview file to make sure that these types of problems are appropriate for your students.

This product includes the following:

  • A link to 3 levels of the activity on Google Slides including student directions
  • A PowerPoint version of the each level that can be uploaded to OneDrive

Standards

Solve multi-step real-life and mathematical problems posed with positive and negative rational numbers in any form (whole numbers, fractions, and decimals), using tools strategically. Apply properties of operations to calculate with numbers in any form; convert between forms as appropriate; and assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies. For example: If a woman making $25 an hour gets a 10% raise, she will make an additional 1/10 of her salary an hour, or $2.50, for a new salary of $27.50. If you want to place a towel bar 9 3/4 inches long in the center of a door that is 27 1/2 inches wide, you will need to place the bar about 9 inches from each edge; this estimate can be used as a check on the exact computation.
Solve linear equations in one variable.
Solve linear equations with rational number coefficients, including equations whose solutions require expanding expressions using the distributive property and collecting like terms.
