    Description

This fun activity helps students recognize common paraphrasing pitfalls and learn how to paraphrase other sources effectively.

We tell our students not to plagiarize other writers' work and to paraphrase quotes into their own words, but for some students, this isn't enough. No matter how many times we explain plagiarism and paraphrasing, some students need hands-on experience before they truly understand what it means to accurately and appropriately paraphrase another's words. These activities give students the hands-on experience they need.

First, students are split into six teams, and then each team is given a movie-quote card and five paraphrases of that quote. Some of these paraphrases are inaccurate, some are identical to the original with a few synonyms thrown in, and some aren't too bad. The team then sorts the paraphrases from worst to best and defends their choices, noting the accuracy and originality of the paraphrases.
