What educators are saying

This was great to reinforce ta and ti-ti with kindergarten and they enjoyed creating their own composition.
This went along wonderfully with If You Give a Mouse a Cookie! I love using literature in music, and this is a great resource to go with one of my favorite children's books. My first and second graders loved it.

Description

Incorporating books into your music classroom is a great way to get students hooked on reading AND music. This elementary music lesson is a fun way to learn or practice rhythm, and can be used in conjunction with the book If You Give a Mouse a Cookie (although you don't have to use the book!).

In this lesson, kindergarten, first grade, or second grade music students will to a movement activity in which they music tip toe or walk to help the mouse get to the cookie. This reinforces forte and piano, because they are responding to the dynamics.

Next, students can practice reading beats by using the cookie cards (printable and digital options) to read patterns with and without a beat. Then, students can create compositions as a class with the different items from the book If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. This can be done with just the objects, or students can add the rhythms that match.

Finally, students can show their learning by creating their own composition with "milk" and "cookie", or with all the different items from the book. There are also worksheets and other activities to show learning.

There are slides and activities centered on ta and titi, as well as some centered on rest. That means that you can use the same lesson with a variety of grade levels!

Includes:

  • Printable lesson plan
  • 45 Slide Google Slides presentation
  • Embedded movement video (loud, soft, and freeze)
  • Composition slides
  • Introduction to ta and titi

  • Printable cookie manipulatives
