Description
Hi everybody!
Do you, your students or your children HATE word problems? Well, you are not alone. I have the perfect resource for you!
This is my 2nd (new and improved) edition of this Word Problems resource. (I also have a similar resource listed for half the cost, if interested)
I have taught 7th, 8th and 9th grade algebra for over 20 years and the #1 complaint I hear from teachers, parents and children is about word problems. Kids just don't get it. Starting from elementary, all the way through high school. These worksheets that I created stemmed from the struggles children have with reading comprehension and translating the English language to the Math language. This was designed for 7th and 8th, but could be used to review ideas in 9th.
This 25 page resource can cover a time span of TWO WEEKS! For my class, I made it an entire unit. But it can also be broken up into smaller lessons and inserted into units, as you need them. It starts at level 1 and the goal is to get to level 7. ( I thought the video game likeness might be relatable). It incorporates money and coin problems, with fractions and decimals, as well as "real world" questions that are relatable to the students.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot the best part: this is an EDITABLE WORD document, which can be modified to your liking. It can also easily be opened in Kami, for students to work on digitally. Also, an answer KEY with step by step solutions is included.
DAY 1: Writing expressions
I started with some basic problems that will help the kids work 1 sentence at a time to help form the expression. Also at this level, the kids will brainstorm VOCABULARY and translate verbal to algebraic. There are a total of 22 questions here.
For each level, 1 example is given with a step by step explanation, along with some NOTES on the topic.
DAY 2: Writing and solving equations
This continues from Level 1 difficulty, but ends in an equation. This can be solved and a solution can be found. These take a bit longer from start to finish, so there are 7 questions at level 2.
DAY 3: Representing the unknown and writing equations
DAY 4: Two or more LET STATEMENTS
DAY 5: Coin and money problems
DAY 6: Consecutive integer problems
DAY 7: Perimeter word problems
DAY 8: REVIEW
There are 76 practice problems altogether, along with 1 example to do as a class. The lessons are 2 pages each (front and back), which is about 8 days worth of material. And all answers are worked out in the answer KEY, with step by step instruction.
This could be a game changer. ENJOY!
