Moon Phases and OREO COOKIE LAB. A TRUE HIT! (Yummy for ALL Ages!)

Understanding moon phases can be difficult for a student or adult of any age. According to the NSF (National Science Foundation), the conceptual process of the moon phases is "misunderstood by adults just as much as children." Well, it's time to fix that! And you can use OREO cookies to help you.

This is a comprehensive activity and mini-lab in which students investigate the dynamic yet predictable nature of lunar phases. Students will investigate the following lunar phases: new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, third quarter, and waning crescent. Additionally and unlike any other activity, students will investigate the 8 moon phases by left to right perspective, light versus dark, and personal visual lens.

To reinforce the lunar phase arrangement and process, additional practice is provided within similar yet different pedagogical realms. Options available to you are a solar system map, 3 possible OREO cookie activities, and a lunar order diagram.

Within the classroom, this activity has been consistently very successful and acclaimed by students in grades 3rd – 8th within multiple types of schools - public, private, and charter.

Has been applied to state mandated North Carolina end of year tests for science in grades 5 and 8.
