Description

The Numerical Powers presentations give the child a concrete understanding and practice understanding the concept of numerical powers. Understanding the concept of numerical powers (exponents) is a pre-requisite for work with squares, cubes, and algebra.

The pre-requisites for this unit are the Function of the Decimal System and Operations, which can be found here:

Unit 1: Function of the Decimal Numbers System

Unit 2: Applying the Four Operations to Decimal Numbers System

Unit 3: Relative Numbers

The Bundle for the Function of the Decimal Numbers System can be found here (it includes a video and printable fraction pieces):
Unit 1: Function of the Decimal System BUNDLE

There is a bundle available for Unit 3: Relative Numbers available here:

Unit 3: Relative Numbers BUNDLE

The presentations in this unit are used:

  • To strike the child’s imagination.
  • To show that the powers of numbers are obtained by multiplying the number by itself.
  • To show that the squaring of 2 can go on infinitely.
  • To understand the process of multiplying a binomial equation.
  • To understand the process of multiplying a trinomial equation.
  • To show the binomial/trinomial square of a number.
  • To show the square of a binomial.
  • To show the square of a trinomial.
  • To reinforce the concept of squaring.

*Fraction circle pieces can be purchased separately in my store here:

Fraction Cut-out Circles for Work with Decimal System and Fractions

This resource includes:

  • Material analysis for the Power of 2 Cube
  • Material analysis for the Numerical Decanomial Box
  • A series of 12 Presentations and Games
  • Detailed step-by-step presentation instructions
  • Photographs and Illustrations
  • With each material analysis presentation is given the purpose, direct aim(s), indirect aim(s), control of error, and points of consciousness

This unit is useful for children from ages 8-10 years of age and up.

After the Operations (Addition, Multiplication, Subtraction, and Division) with the Relative Numbers unit, the child will be ready for work with Numerical Powers.

Use parentheses, brackets, or braces in numerical expressions, and evaluate expressions with these symbols.
Understand that positive and negative numbers are used together to describe quantities having opposite directions or values (e.g., temperature above/below zero, elevation above/below sea level, credits/debits, positive/negative electric charge); use positive and negative numbers to represent quantities in real-world contexts, explaining the meaning of 0 in each situation.
Recognize opposite signs of numbers as indicating locations on opposite sides of 0 on the number line; recognize that the opposite of the opposite of a number is the number itself, e.g., -(-3) = 3, and that 0 is its own opposite.
Write and evaluate numerical expressions involving whole-number exponents.
Write, read, and evaluate expressions in which letters stand for numbers.
