Description

A comprehensive teaching manual for the primary level math on the subject of the Function of the Decimal System (ages 6-9 years of age), based on AMS principles and concepts.

This unit builds on the Early Years Montessori as the child progresses into the next plane: age 6 - 9 years. Math starts with numeration from the numbers 1-10. Once the child has a solid understanding of this concept, they are ready to examine the function of the decimal system.

This manual includes a collection of 12 pages of full step-by-step instructions with diagrams and photographs for 4 math lessons, 4 games, comprehensive material analysis, front cover, and table of contents.

The presentations in this unit are used:

  • To introduce the child to the concept of the decimal system.
  • To make the child familiar with the names and relative sizes of the categories.
  • To help the child with the difference in bulk between e.g. 6 units and 6 thousands.
  • To familiarize the child with the names of the hierarchies (categories).
  • To help the child understand the relative size of each quantity.
  • To offer a sensorial experience of the relative increments in size between hierarchies.
  • To acquaint the child with the written symbols for the new quantities learnt previously.
  • To familiarize the child with the categories of order and the writing of the symbols.
  • To help the child realize that with nine number symbols and a zero it is possible to write any number.
  • To help child realize that the zero keeps the place of a missing digit in the hierarchy.

Each lesson and game includes:

  • Purpose: Direct Aims
  • Indirect Aims
  • Points of Consciousness
  • Control of Error
  • Age Range
  • Illustrations and photographs
  • Tips and/or Games

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect counting to cardinality.
When counting objects, say the number names in the standard order, pairing each object with one and only one number name and each number name with one and only one object.
Understand that each successive number name refers to a quantity that is one larger.
Count to answer “how many?” questions about as many as 20 things arranged in a line, a rectangular array, or a circle, or as many as 10 things in a scattered configuration; given a number from 1-20, count out that many objects.
Compose and decompose numbers from 11 to 19 into ten ones and some further ones, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record each composition or decomposition by a drawing or equation (e.g., 18 = 10 + 8); understand that these numbers are composed of ten ones and one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, or nine ones.
