My students loved this resource. It held their attention and gave me great data. Task cards are my favorite way to differentiate in my classroom. They are easy to use over the course of a few days as needed.

NOTE: This resource uses American English and is not editable.

There are two sets of 32 cards each. The first set is all in pictures while the second set presents the same problems in words. Since the problems on both sets are the same for each card, the included answer key will work for both sets. This means that you can mix and match the sets if you choose. For example, you could swap out the even numbers in one set for the even numbers in the other set so that you have two sets in which every other card is pictures. You can also leave the sets as they are and use the second set for more advanced learners.

In addition, within the sets, the cards are differentiated as follows:

  • Card 1-10 feature only two types of candy
  • Cards 1-20 have sums within .99¢
  • Cards 21-31 have sums that are between $1.00 and $2.00
  • Card 32 requires students to add everything in the store (a fun challenge for those who are able)

There are also three Challenge Cards. Challenge Card #1 can be used with any other card and requires students to make change from a dollar (or two dollars in cards 21-31). A Challenge Card #1 Answer Sheet is provided. The other two challenge cards allow students to select candy from the store and add up the totals.

Three student answer sheets are included. One allows students to record the answers for all 32 cards. A second answer sheet has space to record answers for just the first 20 cards. This one could be used for students who are not yet ready to move beyond a dollar. The third answer sheet allows students to record which coins they used for each card.

For students who are learning to count coins, be sure they have a supply of real or play coins to work with as they solve these problems. If you would rather students focus on adding and subtracting money amounts, you can have them write the amounts for each type of candy on paper in equation format and then add them up. Advanced students will enjoy the challenge of solving the problems mentally.
