Modern Masters: Andy Warhol Documentary Viewing Guide

Modern Masters is a BBC documentary series presented by Alastair Sooke. The series was broadcasted in 2010. Each of the four one hour episodes examines the biography of an artist and his key work through Sooke's considerations and some reenactments.

In this episode, Andy Warhol's life and art are featured, discussing some of Warhol’s famous pieces: Campbell’s Soup, Coke Bottle, Marilyn Monroe, Orange Car Crash. This guide comes with 35 fill-in-the-blank questions to help the viewer follow the documentary. An answer key is provided. The video can be found on YouTube.

The worksheets split the movie into two equal halves. I have had tremendous success with these worksheets. The students stay fully engaged while watching the movie. The fill-in-the-blank questions are in sync with how the documentary is presented. This approach maintains attentive listeners because the students are anxiously waiting for the next upcoming answer.

This activity is perfect for any Studio Art class, Art History class, and U.S. History class.

Warning: There are a few brief sections (30sec-1min) of this documentary that may not be suitable for grades 6th-9th. Please watch the documentary before presenting it to your students. Viewing the documentary beforehand will allow you to personally determine the specific sections that you may want to fast forward.
