Description

How can you use different properties of materials to change the way a ball rolls? Mini Golf courses have many different elements that will speed up, slow down and even stop the ball. How can you design a mini golf game that uses different materials that change the direction of the ball?

By going through the Engineering Design Process, you’ll research about properties of materials and mini golf inspiration. With this information, you’ll plan, build, modify and test a mini golf design.

==========================================

STEM Challenges are a great way to encourage creativity, collaboration and critical thinking. With the tools that I created for you, it should save you time with prep and give you more time to provide an awesome experience for your kids.

==========================================

Go through the Engineering Design Process

  • STEM Challenge Card
  • Task Designing Checklist to keep track of work
  • Learn More About Properties of Materials and Matter Video Links with Reflection
  • Examples of student created mini golf courses
  • Inspiration videos for gathering ideas for things you want to try or not try in design
  • Planning sheet to thoughtfully draw and label design
  • Checklist for ways students can improve their work
  • Student Sheet to attach final design
  • End of activity reflection sheet
  • Standards-based rubric that is specific to this project

==========================================

Bonus Anchor Charts!

  • Engineering Design Process
  • Vocabulary to teach about matter and it's properties: matter, solid, liquid, gas, physical properties of matter (size, color, shape, texture, sound, hardness, flavor, temperature, other physical properties)

==========================================

The resources NOT included that you will need for this STEM challenge are:

  • Large Cardboard (think Amazon boxes)
  • Golf Balls (Ask any avid golfer in your life and they more than likely will have a collection of golf balls they would be thrilled to donate)
  • Mini Golf Putters (HERE is a link to some on Amazon. Some students might have some at home or even your school P.E. teacher. If you have enough time, you could have students design their own putters as well. )
