Minecraft Castle Construction + Area of a Rectangle

This activity has multi-disciplinary aspects. First, this activity will help students to understand how different medieval construction methods are from today's methods. Then students will use the popular game Minecraft to lean how to calculate area from rectangular shapes.

INSTRUCTIONS & APPROXIMATE TIME

1. Have students fill out the Before Watching portion of the worksheet - 30 minutes

2. Have students watch the Medieval Castle Construction Documentary video found in the resource.

IMPORTANT - This video is approximately 1 hour long - ensure you have at least half an hour to watch this, as the first 30 minutes of the video are the most important learning objectives to answer the worksheet.

3. Have students complete the worksheet (Take it Further Optional) - 45 minutes

4. Have students watch the Minecraft Castle Construction video. It is 10 minutes long.

5. Have students build their castles in Minecraft - 60 minutes

6. Have students find the area of their Minecraft Castle rooms on a separate piece of paper - 60 minutes
