What is it?
Mindful Writing is a calm, settling, independent activity I have used at the beginning of my lessons to settle and focus the class, or as a passive brain break. It provides the students with an opportunity to recalibrate their mindset to a more positive setting.
How to do it?
1.Explain the process to the class. "This is a silent 4 -5 minute activity which will help your body to quiet down, settle and focus on the present. It will help us get ready for our lesson."
2. Use the attached powerpoint to provide writing prompts for your class. Slide (1) are key vocabulary items and Slide (2) are sentence starters. Choose the appropriate slide for your student's level.
3. While the background music plays, the students write in silence for the duration. Explain to the students they should be writing for the full length of the song. This might mean rewriting the same or similar sentences or creating new ones. This should not be onerous. It should be an easy, calming activity.
