What educators are saying

I love these worksheets. The differentiation is very helpful. Once they got the hang of it, the owl slider tool was very helpful for students that need that extra visual component. Thank you!

How to use this resource

This fun, hands-on activity helps students learn how to identify middle sounds in words using this unique vowel owl slider tool! These worksheets can also be used without the vowel owl slider tool to give your students more of a challenge.

Students look at the picture and incomplete word, then use the vowel owl slider by moving it up and down through the empty box on the worksheet. When moving the slider up and down students should sound out the word trying each vowel as the middle sound until they identify the correct middle sound. Students then write the correct middle sound in the empty box.

There are also worksheets where students can trace over the correct middle sound for additional support. As these worksheets are differentiated you are sure to find a variation of this activity to suit all your students.

As there are 40 different worksheets this short vowel resource can be used with your entire class as you can ensure most of your students can work on a different worksheet. This middle sounds activity can also be used as a Literacy Center or with smaller groups. You can laminate each worksheet or place it into a dry erase folder before use. Your class can then use dry erase markers to complete the activity. As they can wipe it clean when done your students can get lots of practise with their middle sounds as they can use this resource over and over again!
