Description

Are you ready for a middle school research project your students actually want to do? Students research and create a digital magazine or PowerPoint about the history of a monster, its representation in literature and pop culture, and potential metaphorical analysis.

✅ A fun research project they'll actually do

✅ Plenty of photos to keep their attention

✅ Analysis that doesn't feel like work

Everything you need for planning and prep:

  • Editable guidelines and rubrics
  • Sample project
  • Ideas for differentiation

❤️ You can reuse several of these components for other projects, research, or presentations (the evaluation sheets, for example).

Optimized for grades 6-9.

Can you use this research project with novels and short stories? Certainly! This would be a good companion activity to Frankenstein, World War Z, A Monster Calls, or Miss Peregrine's.

Why do a research project around Halloween? Doing an early research project in the year is a great way to assess students' skills. Then, if you choose to do a longer research unit in the spring, you'll already know what your students can and can't do well. Plus, students LOVE learning through Halloween activities!

What other teachers are saying about these Halloween activities...

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "This is another purchase that I am VERY glad to have made. It's a keeper, people. If you're considering buying, do it. It's exactly what is described. Students research and create a presentation about a monster in literature/pop culture. I added this to the end of my Unit Z after they've learned all about zombies. I let them pick any other monster. It's a perfect October unit."

-Allara G.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "This is an awesome resource! My students are completing this activity, and they love the whole concept of researching monsters! Thanks!"

-Jennifer S.
