Mexico! Frida Kahlo, Her Life & Art | Hispanic Heritage Lesson + Craft for K-5

Mexico! Frida Kahlo, a Mexican Artist is an age-appropriate introduction to the life and artwork of the most famous female artist in Mexico. Students learn about the life of Frida, how she suffered through illness and injury, and how she created art to express her feelings in pictures. Her self-portraits portrayed what was she saw in her surroundings and what was going on inside her heart and mind. By looking at her paintings, we can know Frida in a very intimate way. Students will take a “tour” of Frida’s home, La Casa Azul and re-create the house – inside and out – with a fun, creative, and easy “open the flap” art project. Once “inside” Frida’s studio, students will create a 3-D portrait of Frida.

Learning about other cultures will help create a curious minded global citizen, one that can appreciate how we are alike, how we are different, and how this knowledge makes us more tolerant and open-minded.

Materials needed for art project include blue card stock, light brown card stock, construction paper in variety of colors, black pipe cleaner, colored pencils, scissors, glue stick, white glue, and sequins (optional).
