Metric System Number Line - Classroom Decor

Description
Do your students struggle with understanding how the metric system is related to scientific notation? Do they truly comprehend what the metric prefixes mean? If not, then you need this Metric System Number Line for your classroom.
Many students have been taught a nice acronym to remember their metric prefixes and have learned to slide the decimal to convert between units; however, they really don’t understand the concepts behind the power of ten and the metric system. Our solution was to create a visual number line for our classrooms with illustrations for each metric prefix. We also included a zero in the number line since many students think negative exponents are negative numbers. We leave our number line up on the wall all year. Students refer to this number line on a daily basis. It has really helped them make the connection between scientific notation and the metric system.
This product includes:
• 9 Metric prefix cards including pico-, nano-, micro-, milli-, centi-, Kilo-, Mega-, Giga-, & Tera- (with both American and International spellings)
• Zero Card to show that negative exponents in scientific notation are numbers not negative numbers but are numbers between zero & one
• Base Unit Card showing 10^0 = 1
• Illustrations and examples for each metric prefix so students can actually visualize the differences in scale between the various prefixes
