Description
Are you looking for an engaging reading activity to do to recognize Veterans Day or Memorial Day? My students LOVE Readers' Theaters so I decided to write my own Readers' Theater script that we can read as an entire class on Veterans Day.
The script includes 27 parts. Therefore, it can be used as a whole class activity, or it can be used as a small-group activity (students are just awarded more parts!) If you have a slighter larger class, I have included ideas on how you could get a few extra parts out of this script.
Photographs are included of the seven memorials featured in this script:
- Korean War Memorial
- Vietnam War Memorial
- World War II Memorial
- Arlington National Cemetery
- Tomb of the Unknown Soldier
- Marine Corp Memorial
- 9/11 Pentagon Memorial
This product also includes a bonus activity! Before reading the script, students complete a worksheet similar to an anticipation guide. Students read statements and guess whether the Veteran-related sentences are true or false. AFTER reading the script, have your students return to the worksheet and answer the same questions again. It is always fun for students to see how much they learned! Plus, it holds them accountable to pay attention AND it gives us teachers a glimpse into their comprehension during the reading activity!

********This resource is available in TWO FORMATS:
- TRADITIONAL PRINTABLES- Print each PDF and make paper copies. Distribute the scripts and your students will read from these paper copies.
- EASEL ACTIVITY- With this format, students can read their script from a device. Images are added throughout the script, so students can view pictures of the memorials they are reading about.
Here's what teachers like you had to say about using these scripts in their classroom:
⭐️ Karen O. said, "My students loved this! They asked for more Reader's Theaters during the year because they enjoyed it so much. They learned some things that they did not know about the Armed Forces and veterans also."
⭐️ Julie H. said, "My students absolutely loved this readers’ theater. I’m glad it included pictures of the memorials for a visual. They asked if we could do more of these in the future!"
⭐️ Aspire to Inspire said, "We read this over 2 days in reading class. My students were just as excited day 2 as they were day 1 to continue reading this script. As a social studies teacher as well, I appreciated this history included. It is well written, realistic, and full of interesting facts."
