What educators are saying

My students really enjoyed this activity. I allowed them to choose the craft they wanted to make and had to give more time than anticipated to make their craft.

Description

Research shows that students only remember 10% of what they read, 20% of what they hear, and 90% of what they say and do! This activity will allow your students to experience the challenges of trade in medieval Europe and explore the changes brought forth by the emergence of guilds in a way that is engaging and memorable.

After completion of this activity students will be able to explain how guilds changed trade in medieval Europe.
Students will also understand the following:
Guilds are business groups. Each craft has its own guild.
Guilds set the price for a product or service and enforce standards of quality for products.
Guilds decided who could join their guild.
New guild members were called “apprentices” and learned their craft from a Master Artisan. During their apprenticeship they received training, room and board, but were not compensated through wages.
