What educators are saying

This was a great resource! My students had great discussions about lab safety and utilized what they had already learned along with the material in the stations labs to complete the safety chat. I will definitely be using this in the future.

Description

Do you have large jars of pennies? Now you have something to do with them! Celebrate Presidents day with this basic skills unit based around pennies!

In this activity students sort pennies by year and measure their mass. They then compare the masses throughout history and compare the composition of pennies throughout history.

Objectives:
•to practice using a balance
•to determine the mass of a penny
•to see if there is a change in mass of pennies through the decades

Students really get into this...they love looking for old pennies in piles and seeing the difference in mass and metals!

This is also a great exercise in collecting and analyzing data…making conclusions from data. Students also evaluate the task…is it valid?
