What educators are saying

This gave additional practice to students who are used to only measuring something when the ruler begins with zero.
These are great for increasing fluency, differentiation, and data collection. They are also great for homework.

Description

Need the perfect, ready-to-go measuring using a broken ruler activities? Grab these measuring with a broken ruler activities for your 1st or 2nd grade students, including: measuring with a broken ruler lesson plan, warm up, turn & talk, instructional video, anchor charts, learning target, and practice worksheet.

This includes ONE measurement activity that is a part of a bigger Measurement Math Unit Bundle!

Broken Ruler Measurement Skills Covered:

  • Students will practice looking at "broken" rulers to find how many inches long an object is
  • What is a broken ruler? A broken ruler is when an object is fixed to a certain point on a ruler, and the other part of the ruler is either missing or the object cannot be moved. This allows students to have a deeper understanding of measurement, as they are not starting at 0 but still must figure out the number of inches long an object is.

How Long Will the Broken Ruler Measurement Activities Take?

These broken ruler measurement activities are designed to fill one lesson period. They will take anywhere from 25-90 minutes.

What standards are covered in the Broken Ruler Measurement Activities?

  • 2.MD.A.2: Measure the length of an object twice, using length units of different lengths for the two measurements; describe how the two measurements relate to the size of the unit chosen.
  • 2.MD.A.5: Generate measurement data by measuring lengths of several objects to the nearest whole unit, or by making repeated measurements of the same object. Show the measurements by making a line plot, where the horizontal scale is marked off in whole-number units.
  • 2.MD.A.1: Order three objects by length; compare the lengths of two objects indirectly by using a third object.
  • 2.MD.A.2: Express the length of an object as a whole number of length units, by laying multiple copies of a shorter object (the length unit) end to end; understand that the length measurement of an object is the number of same-size length units that span it with no gaps or overlaps.

When to Use the Broken Ruler Measurement Activities:

  • Math Block - Whole Group or Small Group
  • Homeschool Environment

Measure the length of an object twice, using length units of different lengths for the two measurements; describe how the two measurements relate to the size of the unit chosen.
Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve word problems involving lengths that are given in the same units, e.g., by using drawings (such as drawings of rulers) and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
