Description

This is a great way to introduce measuring by shortest to longest to your Kindergarteners!

Page one includes standards (CC.MA.K.MD.1 & CC.MA.K.MD.2) and focus/teaching point.

Page two -Tell students to look at the paintbrushes. Which is shorter, pink or red? Which is longer, pink or red? How do you know. Show me by lining them up on the line on the left side.

Page three- Tell students to look at the rulers. Which is shorter, blue or yellow? How do you know? Where would you place the ruler on the line? Why? Show me. (Have students measure both rulers to the paintbrushes).

Page four- Tell students to look at the crayons. Which do you think is longer, purple or orange? How do you know? Where would you place the ruler on the line? Why? Show me. (Have students measure both rulers to the paintbrushes).

Page five- Compare and contrast all of the items. Which is the shortest of the group? Which is the longest? How do you know?

After this lesson, I placed down a piece of masking tape on the floor and my students lined up items from shortest to longest in whole group. Then they went back to their tables with a bin of items and put them in order from shortest to longest on a piece of tape at their table in cooperative learning groups .
