Description

This is the second in a series of 4 video lessons on Customary Measurement and the Fractions involved. This package includes a video (4:31 minutes) which features the lousy joke telling of our animated character host, Chloe. Also included is a lesson plan, Common Core Standards relative to the Measurement Unit, and student worksheets (2) which accompany the video.

Other videos in this series are: Video 2: The Inch, Video 3: Equivalent fractions, and Video 4: Measuring the Line.

This video provides instruction on the breakdown of an inch using colored cardstock to demonstrate the division of segments to get halves, fourths, eighths, and sixteenths.

Chloe, the animated host of the series, visits in the beginning and end of the video to provide a bit of entertainment.

The student worksheets contain templates identical to those used in the video for students to utilize as they complete questions and activities relative to the video.

These materials have been used in my classroom and are helping students to grasp the concept of measurement and basic fractions at the same time!

Know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units including km, m, cm; kg, g; lb, oz.; l, ml; hr, min, sec. Within a single system of measurement, express measurements in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Record measurement equivalents in a two-column table. For example, know that 1 ft is 12 times as long as 1 in. Express the length of a 4 ft snake as 48 in. Generate a conversion table for feet and inches listing the number pairs (1, 12), (2, 24), (3, 36),...
Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8). Use operations on fractions for this grade to solve problems involving information presented in line plots. For example, given different measurements of liquid in identical beakers, find the amount of liquid each beaker would contain if the total amount in all the beakers were redistributed equally.
Understand a fraction 1/𝘣 as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into 𝘣 equal parts; understand a fraction 𝘢/𝑏 as the quantity formed by 𝘢 parts of size 1/𝘣.
Understand two fractions as equivalent (equal) if they are the same size, or the same point on a number line.
Recognize and generate simple equivalent fractions, (e.g., 1/2 = 2/4, 4/6 = 2/3). Explain why the fractions are equivalent, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.
