What educators are saying

We love math mysteries! I used this as an extension activity for my students that were ready to move on while the rest of the class was still working on mastering different concepts. Thanks for the awesome resource!
This was a great quick and engaging activity I used for emergency sub plans! The kids loved it so much they asked to finish it when I returned. I always love the videos that go along with these activities as it really gets the students hooked and motivated to complete the activity.

Description

Mean, Median, and Mode Review Activity - 7th Grade Edition: The Case of Mean Mountain. Engage and motivate your students with this fun math mystery activity! Great for practice and review! These easy-prep worksheets (or Google Slides) have an optional video hook to set the stage to engage and an ending video to wrap up the case.

Easy prep! Just Print & Solve! Or go paperless with the new Google Docs option provided within your download.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Optional video hook included for introducing the case! (Check it out in the preview section)

BONUS: Ending video added to wrap up the case!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Distance Learning Update: I've added a Word Document in the folder containing a Google Slides link to share this resource with your students via Google Classroom or Drive. Parts of the pages are editable, so your students can complete them without printing the pages. Please note you will need to make a copy of the Google Slides to your drive before you can edit.-

To unlock clues, students must use their math skills (involving mean, median, and mode). Then, use their powers of deduction to narrow down the list of suspects to find the culprit and the device to fix the problem!

Suggestion: Pace the clues one by one to keep the class at the same point. If using the clues in a different order, keep the suspect list away from students until all five clues are completed and discovered.

Preparation

- EASY PREP! Print the student pages, staple or place them in a folder, and your students are set to go.

- Have the video hook ready for viewing at the start of the lesson on an IWB, iPad, or computer monitor screen.

- Editable suspects list included: This lets you change the suspect names to alter the final mystery outcome. Two alternative pre-made lists also included for a quick swap out.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Math Skills Required to Unlock Clues

There are five clues to crack to solve the mystery:

  • Clue 1 Worksheet: Calculate the Median
  • Clue 2 Worksheet: Calculate the Mean
  • Clue 3 Worksheet: Calculate the Mode
  • Clue 4 Worksheet: Calculate the Mean, Median, & Mode
  • Clue 5 Worksheet: Calculate the Mean, Median, & Mode

(The data sets of numbers mainly range between 1 - 100, with higher numbers being introduced into later clue data sets. More numbers are generally included in data sets compared to the 6th grade edition. The calculations in the 7th-grade edition are harder than the 6th grade edition of this Math Mystery.)

Students must use critical thinking skills to determine what the clue is telling them to eliminate from the list of possibilities.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Multiple Uses

- Suitable for independent, pairs, or group work.

- Use as part of your math centers, add to your sub tubs, make it part of your early finisher tasks, give for homework, or make it part of your classroom practice/review sessions.

I recommend pacing this activity by giving students one clue at a time. Once the whole class has completed a clue, then move on to the next clue, either within the same lesson or the next math session. New math content presented? Make a lesson out of it by modeling the math before diving into the clue. I like to say, "We must learn something new before attempting the next clue."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How long will this activity take?

Time to complete will vary anywhere between 30mins - 2 hours or more! It mainly depends on how familiar your students are with the math mystery format and how difficult they find math skills covered in the particular mystery. Please check the math skills outlined in the clues above to help determine suitability for your class.
