Description

Make story problems FUN with this word problem treasure hunt! This story problem activity is perfect for 2nd or 3rd grade story problem practice, math review, math centers, or a pirate theme math activity.

How does the treasure hunt work? As students solve the story problems around the room, they will match up the answer to the corresponding clue word on their decoder page. When all problems have been solved, they will form a final clue for the location of the treasure. Then, X marks the spot!

In addition to the PRINT & GO pages, this resource includes a set of editable PowerPoint templates (the text boxes are editable - the clip art is not), so you can personalize the problems, decoder pages, and answer keys to meet the needs of your students year after year. You'll find the automatic download link for the templates on pg. 3 of the PDF download.

This resource includes 4 different treasure hunt activities that increase in difficulty for easy differentiation.

  • Version 1: Addition, even/odd, counting by 5s, place value
  • Version 2: Subtracting 2-digit numbers, adding money, estimating
  • Version 3: Subtracting money over zeros, area & perimeter, division,

multiplication

  • Version 4: Geometry, fractions, more difficult multi-step problems

Each of the 4 treasure hunt activities includes:

  • 1 Find the Treasure student instruction page
  • 1 Clue Tracker page
  • 1 Decoder page
  • 1 answer key
  • 10 story problem pages

To Print:

  • Class set of Decoder Page
  • One of each story problem – put these around the room (If you need to save paper, print on four-per-page setting and use this as a task card activity)
  • (Optional) Class set of Clue Tracker pages – this provides more structure for students who need an organized way to keep track of their answers and the corresponding clue words. It also encourages students to solve the problems themselves instead of relying on choosing already given answers off the decoder page.

To Do:

  • Place the story problem pages around the room.
  • Decide whether to give students the Clue Tracker pages first and then have them get the Decoder page when this is complete (I recommend this) or start directly with the Decoder page.
  • Introduce the activity using pg. 4/20/36/52 (you can display this on your screen by holding CTRL+L) and start hunting!

Solve real world and mathematical problems involving perimeters of polygons, including finding the perimeter given the side lengths, finding an unknown side length, and exhibiting rectangles with the same perimeter and different areas or with the same area and different perimeters.
Use the four operations to solve word problems involving distances, intervals of time, liquid volumes, masses of objects, and money, including problems involving simple fractions or decimals, and problems that require expressing measurements given in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Represent measurement quantities using diagrams such as number line diagrams that feature a measurement scale.
