Description
This math skills pre-assessment (which was updated in March 2022) was created for newly arrived English Language Learner students so that teachers could identify any major gaps in mathematical understanding before heading straight into the grade level math content. This 100 question assessment is specifically created for students with limited English proficiency as it limits the linguistic demands that are often found in many other math assessments and contains a sample question for each section in order to familiarize students with each task. The questions gradually increase in difficulty but make no assumptions about students' prior mathematical learning. Concepts assessed include: counting (one to one correspondence), basic number sense, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, sequencing numbers, shapes, telling time, counting money, fractions, decimals, square roots, bar graph comprehension, graphing points, and solving 1 step and 2 step equations. Answer key is attached at the end of the assessment, and may be appropriate for a variety of grade levels.
