Description
The integer timeline can be used as a project while or going after number sense (integers). It is targeted for sixth grade but can be modified to use with fifth or seventh graders. The project is complete with a description, checklist for students, a rubric, a premade timeline to help students who struggle creating their own, and an example timeline to show students.
You can extend the project to sixth graders or seventh graders by including a written portion. For example, you could ask a seventh grader to find the distance between the event that happened furthest before his/her birth and after his/her birth to align to 7.NS.A.1.
This project aligns to Common Core State Standards:
- 6.NS.C.5
- 6.NS.C.6
- 6.NS.C.6.C

CCSS6.NS.C.5
Understand that positive and negative numbers are used together to describe quantities having opposite directions or values (e.g., temperature above/below zero, elevation above/below sea level, credits/debits, positive/negative electric charge); use positive and negative numbers to represent quantities in real-world contexts, explaining the meaning of 0 in each situation.
CCSS6.NS.C.6
Understand a rational number as a point on the number line. Extend number line diagrams and coordinate axes familiar from previous grades to represent points on the line and in the plane with negative number coordinates.
CCSS6.NS.C.6c
Find and position integers and other rational numbers on a horizontal or vertical number line diagram; find and position pairs of integers and other rational numbers on a coordinate plane.
