Hexagonal thinking is an activity which engages students in higher order thinking through abstract connections and associations. Students create a pathway using the hexagons with words that relate to another. One hexagon may connect to one or many other hexagons. Students will pair, compare, sort, and relate key words that fit with a central topic. Additionally, consider providing students with blank hexagons on which they can write words they wish to include in their thinking pathways.
Think of each hexagon as a puzzle piece, but there is no picture on the top of the puzzle box. There are no “wrong” answers. Encourage students to justify their thinking and explain the connections they make between the words on each hexagon.
Consider using the “Discussion Guide Sentence Frames” to guide discussions between individuals or groups of students who create a hexagonal thinking pathway together or independently. The “Hexagonal Thinking Notes” worksheet can be used to record and submit ideas.
This product is a great way to pair language and mathematics, and increase students' engagement, creative and critical thinking, and collaboration.
Use this activity as a fun, interactive way to review and prepare for standardized tests.
