What educators are saying

There are so few resources out there for this standard on an upper grade level. This is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you!
I use these task cards every year to prepare my students for the IREAD3 test. They are a great resource!

Description

Matching Vowel Sounds Task Cards: This set of 40 task cards will give your upper elementary students an opportunity to practice reading a word, and then selecting another word that has the same vowel sound. Each task card consists of a question, a "target word", and four multiple-choice options. Students often must stretch out the follow sounds to determine the correct answer.

All of the cards are set up the same, with the question followed by four multiple-choice options. Here is an example that shows the contents of one task card.

Which of the following words has the same vowel sound as in this word: cliff

A. bring

B. find

C. witch

D. shine

Once they choose their answer, students record it on their recording sheet. Like most of my task card sets, I have included a bonus game-like answer sheet in addition to the more traditional recording sheet. For the game-like answer sheet, students record their answers on a themed worksheet that says "Help Kristy and Braxton decide which instruments they should choose." Once they have recorded all their answers, students tally their A, B, C, and D answers. Whichever instrument collects the highest number of tallies will be the instrument chosen by Braxton. Whichever instrument collects the lowest total will be the instrument chosen by Kristy.

Many teachers report posting the task cards around the room to give their students an opportunity to get up and walk around the room. Others say that they use these as a whole class formative activity where they place a task card under their doc cam, and then have students write their chosen answer on whiteboards. Both activities provide an engaging alternative to a traditional worksheet activity!

********This resource is available in three formats:

  1. Traditional Printables- Print the PDF and distribute paper task cards and recording sheets.
  2. Easel Activity- Students can complete this activity on a device. Students read each question and select an answer. This has a multiple-choice format, and students push the button that displays the correct answer. No checking is necessary! When your students turn it in, you will see their score and the number of attempts they made on each card.
  3. Easel Assessment- Students complete this self-grading quiz on a device, as well. After reading each question, students select the correct answer from a list of four possible answer choices. With this option, the teacher chooses whether or not his or her students receive immediate feedback.
