These are Google Slides designed to help students master the art of summarisation. Summarisation is an essential skill for effective reading, writing and comprehension. This is a carefully crafted resource aligned with Bloom’s Taxonomy and the Common Core Standards for ELA-Literacy in Writing. The goal of this resource is to guide students through the process of summarisation with a comprehensive approach that covers essential learning objectives and success criteria. REMEMBERING

  • Match the do’s of the summary with their reasons for doing it.
  • Match the don’ts of the summary with their reasons not to do them.

UNDERSTANDING

  • Match the author’s language with its impact on the readers.
  • Use 5-FINGER RETELL strategy to give a sentence summary of the fable “The Hare and the Tortoise”.
  • Use 5W1H technique to give a sentence summary of the fable “The Hare and the Tortoise”.
  • Select a phrase that best summarises the given extracts.

APPLYING

  • Annotate the text, identify the problems caused by ‘hippo’ and tackle them.
  • Select relevant material from the given text and plan your summary using the planning frame.
  • Use the sample plan to write the first draft of the summary.
  • Use the word bank to write the first draft of the summary.
  • Use the sentence frame to write the summary.

ANALYSING

  • Analyse the summary and identify the do’s and don’ts.

EVALUATING

  • Evaluate the summary for the author’s use of language.
  • Evaluate the summaries to say which of these are right and wrong and why.

CREATING

  • Differentiated Tasks.
  • Each task has a prompt, passage, planning frame and sentence frame.
  • Rubrics, both for reading and writing, to assess student outcomes.
