Manifest Destiny Socratic Seminar--Two Day Activity

This is a two day activity, perfect for a thorough introduction to Manifest Destiny. Day 1 includes a PowerPoint presentation and a printable note catcher handout. This covers the good, the bad, and the ugly of Manifest Destiny. There is also an article from 2012 about a controversy surrounding a "Manifest Destiny" tee shirt that was pulled from shelves after a public outcry. This article is the basis for a Socratic Seminar activity to be conducted on Day 2. Students will read the article during Day 1 and prepare questions and comments they will bring to the conversation on Day 2. Day 2 contains a second PowerPoint that will help the teacher guide the class through the Socratic Seminar. This presentation also contains an activity where student analyze a painting of Manifest Destiny. This activity was very effective and well received by my students. You can easily modify it to fit your needs. This is a good two days!
