The Word Making Toolkit is based on Patricia Cunningham’s popular and effective Making Words activities. When they make words, kids manipulate a set of letters to build words, explore spelling patterns, and develop their spelling abilities. It’s a great fit in any Word Work literacy center. This is truly a multilevel activity that will benefit your beginning spellers, yet challenge your more advanced spellers. The activity can be done whole-class, small-group, or independently. It’s a great stand-alone activity, or as a component in an Interactive Notebook--photos and materials included!

Directions: Students cut out the scrambled letter tiles along the side of the Word Building page. They’ll manipulate those letters to build as many words as possible, sorting them according to the number of letters. Students then try to find the Mystery Word—the word that uses ALL of the letters. (This is often the most exciting part, and kids LOVE to try to figure that out right away!) To extend the activity even further, a Spelling Sort mat is included so that students can sort their new words by spelling pattern.
