Description

This main idea and supporting details resource consists of four practice worksheets. Each worksheet contains a high-interest nonfiction reading passage related to Thanksgiving. This will provide you with an opportunity to spiral back to review the skill of identifying the main idea and supporting details during the month of November! Finding the main idea and the key supporting details can be a difficult skill for some students to master, so repeated opportunities at multiple points throughout the school year is essential!

For each passage, they will answer two multiple-choice questions.

  • The first question is: "Which of the following sentences best states the main idea of the passage?"

  • The second question is: "Which would be the best title for this passage?"

I have found that my students struggle with this type of question on multiple-choice tests because in some ways it is somewhat subjective what the best title would be. Therefore, I included a DETAILED ANSWER KEY that explains why a certain answer is the best title for the passage.

These no-prep theme worksheets are ready to go for you. Just print and go! With four unique worksheets, this packet is ideal for teachers who wish to use a scaffolded approach, like the "I Do, We Do, You Do" teaching strategy. You can complete one or two worksheets as a class or small group, and then have the students complete the remaining worksheets independently.

********This resource is available in three formats:

  1. Traditional Printables- Print the PDF and distribute the pencil-and-paper worksheet.
  2. Easel Activity- Students can complete this digital activity on a device. Students read each passage and answer the multiple-choice question that follows. Students click on the sentence to select their answer. This version is self-checking!
  3. Easel Assessment- Students complete this self-grading quiz on a device, as well. After reading a passage, students select the main idea or best title from a list of four possible answer choices. With this option, the teacher chooses whether or not his or her students receive immediate feedback.
