Description

This is a Linear Systems Story Problem Generator in the vein of MadLibs® that your algebra students will love. Have volunteers suggest nouns, adjectives, etc. and the spreadsheet instantly creates four customized story problems and an answer key. Your class will never have more fun solving systems of equations in two variables than with this! [Focus projector recommended.]

I’ve also included a worksheet generator (with key) to expand the functionality of the product. You can now print copies for absent students, or make your own – straightforward or zany - story problems for homework.

You can instantly generate new random numbers (and, hence, new problems) by pressing F9 or by changing a cell. There are over 100 billion different possibilities but the fill-in-the-blank nature means there are limitless new problems you can generate. There are four styles of problems: one that is generally easiest to solve by substitution and three by elimination.

The story problems address the following Common Core standards:
CCSS.Math.8.EE.C.8.b
Solve systems of two linear equations in two variables algebraically, and estimate solutions by graphing the equations. Solve simple cases by inspection
CCSS.Math.8.EE.C.8.c
Solve real-world and mathematical problems leading to two linear equations in two variables.
CCSS.Math.HSA-REI.C.6
Solve systems of linear equations exactly and approximately (e.g., with graphs), focusing on pairs of linear equations in two variables.

This activity is student-tested and teacher-approved!

Product download information:
This product is a zipped folder containing a .pdf which details how you can implement the story problem generator, and an excel file – the Linear Systems Story Problem Generator. You need to be able to run a Microsoft Excel file to be able to use this.

Solve systems of two linear equations in two variables algebraically, and estimate solutions by graphing the equations. Solve simple cases by inspection. For example, 3𝘹 + 2𝘺 = 5 and 3𝘹 + 2𝘺 = 6 have no solution because 3𝘹 + 2𝘺 cannot simultaneously be 5 and 6.
Solve real-world and mathematical problems leading to two linear equations in two variables. For example, given coordinates for two pairs of points, determine whether the line through the first pair of points intersects the line through the second pair.
Solve systems of linear equations exactly and approximately (e.g., with graphs), focusing on pairs of linear equations in two variables.
