Description

This EDITABLE product asks students to sort cards containing the basic properties of organic compounds, based on information they need to pull from text. It provides a short reading about organic compounds (carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids), a blank student sheet, and cards to be cut out and laminated by the teacher.

I first pass out the student sheet and reading, and have my students read and highlight t for key information. Then I hand out the envelopes with the cards and ask students to sort the cards in their blank organizers based on the information in their readings. You can also have students just fill in the graphic organizer as they go along. This can be done individually, in pairs, or in small groups.

I have included a PDF and a Word document, so you can feel free to modify and differentiate to meet your classroom and students' needs. Enjoy!

NGSSHS-LS1-6
Construct and revise an explanation based on evidence for how carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen from sugar molecules may combine with other elements to form amino acids and/or other large carbon-based molecules. Emphasis is on using evidence from models and simulations to support explanations. Assessment does not include the details of the specific chemical reactions or identification of macromolecules.
