This MLK Day writing prompts resource includes 15 MLK Day themed prompts to get students thinking and writing about MLK Day and the associated experiences and activities.There are 5 writing prompts for each of the following categories: opinion writing, informative/explanatory writing, and narrative writing.
We have also included mini versions of each writing prompt that can easily be pasted into an interactive notebook or writing journal and completed therein. Additionally, there is a cover page that can be colored by the students and stapled to their completed writing prompts.
Journal Writing Prompts in this Resource:
Opinion Writing Prompts
- Dr. King lead the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Do you think boycotts are an effective tool for change?
- Have you ever been treated unjustly based upon your race, age, or gender? In your opinion, what was unjust about the treatment?
- Dr. King wanted people judged by the “content of their character”. What does that mean to you?
- Do you think it’s right for boys and girls to have separate sports teams because of gender? Why or why not?
- Should the same school rules apply to all students? What can you do if you believe an injustice is being done?
Informative/Explanatory Writing Prompts
- Can you explain the term, prejudice? Give an example from your experience.
- In the past, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against the South’s “separate, but equal” laws. Explain how those laws were unjust.
- Explain what people gained with the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments to the U.S. Constitution.
- Dr. King’s thoughts and beliefs were influenced by Gandhi and others. How and by whom have your beliefs been influenced?
- Have you challenged a home or school rule in order to have the rule changed? What strategies and arguments did you use? Did you accomplish your goal?
Narrative Writing Prompts
- MLK gave the famous, “I Have a Dream” speech. What dream do you have for your future?
- MLK preached nonviolent civil disobedience. Tell about a time when you tried to change something in a peaceful manner.
- Have you ever tried to change someone’s mind about an issue? What was the issue and what persuasive arguments did you use?
- Rosa Parks brought attention to an unjust issue. Tell how you brought attention to an important issue in your life.
- Tell of a change that you have seen in the country or the world. Did it improve the lives of others?
