I have developed and used these units over the past decade in my class. They have absolutely everything you need! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED...not just by me, but by colleagues who have tested them out as well!

These units are specially designed to address the challenges of intermediate-age math classes:

    • the extreme disparity of students' skills, knowledge and confidence in a Grade 7 or 8 classroom
    • increasing the amount of time available for quality teacher-student interaction to affect change and growth
    • decreasing the amount of time spent in whole-class teacher-led lessons
    • managing the needs of students working at a quicker or slower pace
    • implementing stigma-free differentiation
    • achieving the right amount of practice to ensure consolidation of new skills
    • increasing natural math talk between students during partner work
    • decreasing test anxiety
    • increasing student self-advocacy and time management skills
    • test prep with the practice test system

The units were constructed in a graduated growth style. The initial stage focuses on one concept. Students have time to practice that concept before moving on to the next. As each new concept is introduced, previous learning is reviewed and consolidated. By the end of the unit, students have had the opportunity to gain fluency and confidence in their learning.

Your students will love this model! These units were also designed to be run in a student-driven, self-paced approach. While the teacher does deliver some whole class instruction, the teacher acts more as a facilitator and guide than the traditional didactic method. The teacher releases a certain number of assignments in chunks and sets dates when that work needs to be completed. Because the nature of delivery is so flexible, the teacher can easily differentiate based on individual needs:

    • reduce required quantity of output
    • assign students to redo the same assignment because they will be excited to see how much they remember (because the work is familiar and safe)
    • decrease the amount of practice faster learners are required to complete
    • students don't notice (or care) what other students are working on because they are focused on and engaged in their own work
