Description

Sometimes it is fun to do M & M's counting and graphing at different times of the year on birthdays, holidays, or as a treat. It can be a great experiment to see if results change depending on the time of year, too. Try it at Halloween, then repeat for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine's, St. Patrick's Day and Easter. Compare the results. Students love it! Has teacher directions, two M & M's sorting mats in color or black and white, a tally sheet with questions, a bar graph worksheet, and a one-page document for them to collect their data and create a bar graph and pictograph. Students must count the candies, sort according to color attributes, answer questions regarding numbers, and create a bar graph. This activity has no seasonal graphics, so you can use it any time of year. Digital and Print: Includes an Easel Activity ready for learning with digital tools. Assign it online in Google Classroom or use a link in any LMS. Select the pages you want and add your own directions or notes. 10 total pages including 4 digital pages. Please see the preview.

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect counting to cardinality.
When counting objects, say the number names in the standard order, pairing each object with one and only one number name and each number name with one and only one object.
Understand that the last number name said tells the number of objects counted. The number of objects is the same regardless of their arrangement or the order in which they were counted.
Count to answer “how many?” questions about as many as 20 things arranged in a line, a rectangular array, or a circle, or as many as 10 things in a scattered configuration; given a number from 1-20, count out that many objects.
Identify whether the number of objects in one group is greater than, less than, or equal to the number of objects in another group, e.g., by using matching and counting strategies.
