Lunar New Year Craft for Middle School - Agamograph Project
- Google Slides™
Description
Celebrating the Lunar New Year is a great cultural experience in middle school. This activity is simple but meaningful. Each student will do some basic research on a zodiac animal and complete the agamograph craft project. Kids will color one of the animals, create an appropriate background, and then create a symbol to represent the animal based on their research.
Agamographs are designed as an "optical illusion", where depending on the angle, kids will see either the picture or the word (see the preview for a visual of this).
This is in slideshow format but is formatted to 11 x 8.5 for printing.
This product includes:
✅Research slide - with room for kids to do some basic research; a website is provided so it's not overly complicated (this slide is editable)
✅Agamograph picture directions - so kids know exactly what to do
✅12 zodiac animal agamograph picture selections - as part of their craft
✅Blank agamograph - for students who would like to draw their own animal picture
✅Example agamograph - because it's always easier to understand directions with an example.
Here is what I recommend:
⭐️Preview the research slide. This is editable, so change anything you'd like before assigning.
⭐️Assign each student an animal. “Picking from a hat” would work well, or just turn the selections over to the blank side and randomly pass them out to students. Alternatively, you can let kids choose.
⭐️Print your materials (note: slides are sized 11.5x8 for standard printing) - I'll let you know exactly what to print in the teacher directions
⭐️Gather materials. You’ll need crayons/colored pencils, scissors, and glue
sticks for each student.
⭐️Have kids do some basic research on the animal. I have a suggested website in the directions.
⭐️Have students color in the left side (the side with numbers and the picture of the animal). Be sure that they make it realistic. Definitely add an appropriate background and make it colorful.
⭐️Then, students create a symbol based on their research on the right side (the side with letters). You will see that the sample shows the rat with a symbol of intelligence. Be sure to add color to the background of the symbol as well.
⭐️Students then cut the strips out, leaving the numbers and letters on top. Paste each strip to the appropriate column of the template.
⭐️Fold like an accordion. It creates an optical illusion. When you look at it from a right angle, you will see the picture. When you look at it from a left angle, you will see the symbol.
⭐️Make some time to share. Agamographs make a great display!
