Description

"Love Medicine" by Louise Erdrich is a college prep read for most students. It won the 1984 National Book Critics Circle Award. "Love Medicine," published in 1984, explores 60 years in the lives of a small group of Chippewa (Ojibwa) living on the Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation In North Dakota. Each chapter is narrated by a different character in a conversational tone representative of Native American storytelling technique and culture. The reader is taken into the a rich unique culture that delves into the strong connection to the land, and the interrelatedness of all life. It also examines the issues of survival, abandonment and self-knowledge. There seems to be a disintegration of the strong tribal spirit as well as lands that no longer can support livelihood. However, when relationships break down, the bonds to a tribe and family can be restored; and in this case through two extremely strong female characters, LuLu and Marie. The strength of character of these two women, intense rivals for the affection of one male, bond and are the salvation of a family as well as a rich culture that is ever evolving.
