Description

“It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept and celebrate those differences.” Audre Lorde

Los Pronombres

This is the first book from a series called “Celebrating our Differences” that I’m creating en Español around the concepts of identity and representation (mirrors, windows and sliding glass doors). They are all aligned with the social justice standards by @learningforjustice and the anti-bias education standards.

Rationale: When you introduce children to the concepts of representation and identity from an early age, you prepare them to become aware of the impact of biases and stereotypes on their social identities and others.' This awareness also allows them to develop critical thinking skills and agency to become activists.

Caregivers and educators can help young children identify the different social components of their identities, such as gender, race, ethnicity, culture, religion, ability, interests or family structure. As children learn to value each facet of who they are, it also helps them view themselves as unique individuals; they also become more inclined to care about and celebrate the social identities of others.

I’m overly excited to be able to help educators and caregivers hold important, necessary conversations with the young ones in their lives.

About the book:

It’s 27 page book in PDF/presentation format

It’s factual and narrated in simple Spanish

It has beautiful, appealing images that not only aid with comprehension but that can also prompt conversations about biases and assumptions about gender identity.

Some pages feature important questions and images that leave room for interesting class discussions.

A few pages explain and illustrate how inclusive works either using the morpheme E or X.

For novice learners: You can scaffold and accommodate by introducing key vocabulary. You can also leverage other languages in you class repertoire to aid comprehension or divide the content of the book in several mini lessons.

More proficient students can do group or individual projects after reading the book or partake of am awareness campaign in your community.
