Description
Aligned with the Grades 1/2 Ontario Social Studies, Music, and Language curricula. I have packages that include only the Grade 1 project and only the Grade 2 project - check the links at the bottom of the description.
In this assignment, students will create an 8-beat chant to describe a community. Each grade has several pages which scaffold the activity for students into very important stages. This activity is intended to span over a week or two (or three)! After completion, students can orally present their community chants.
I've used this activity in two very different Grades 1/2 classes so far and it's been a hit. It's the same activity but the two versions are modified to address both expectations as per The Ontario Curriculum:
** Social Studies
- Grade 1 - The Local Community
- Grade 2 - Global Communities
** Music
- Grade 1 - quarter notes and eighth notes + rests
- Grade 2 - quarter, eighth, half, and whole notes + rests
It fits in well with the Grade 2 Ontario Music Educators' Association unit plan - or can stand alone by itself (and your wonderful lessons).
Grade 1s will:
- make lists describing their local community
- select favourite words (critical thinking)
- sort words based on their rhythmic notation as per the Grade 1 Music curriculum
- write words and notation onto square templates
- arrange words in an interesting manner to create an 8-beat chant
Grade 2s will:
- complete a Venn Diagram comparing 2 communities
- make lists describing their global community
- select favourite words (critical thinking)
- sort words based on their rhythmic notation as per the Grade 2 Music curriculum
- write words and notation onto square templates
- arrange words in an interesting manner to create an 8-beat chant
It is important to note that I have DIFFERENTIATED the Grade 2 Global Communities assignment into three streams:
1. ta, ti-ti (grade 1 music)
2. ta, ti-ti, ta-ah (in-between)
3. ta, ti-ti, ta-ah, tah-ah-ah-ah (full grade 2 music)
You can get a reportable mark/observation and comments for:
- music
- social studies
- oral communication
- writing
** Rubric based on the Ontario Achievement Charts included.
More Grade 1 Materials {Ontario Curriculum}
I Have, Who Has? {Canadian Provinces and Capital Cities}
** My Responsibilities: Heritage and Identity {Ontario Curriculum}
