What educators are saying

This is a very thorough resource! I love the pre-lesson that introduces students to morse code, and then being able to apply that to a familiar story was great! The additional ELA resources are perfect too!
This is a fun, interactive product that the kid’s are so excited to do. There are many different books/activities that are just right for everyone.

Description

Can your students help save Grandmother from the hungry wolf? They can and they will, by coding a message. This is the perfect STEM activity when you are learning about sound and waves. Using the information provided and simple materials, students will construct a way to create an auditory message and send out a distress signal.

The Story

Grandma is ill and Little Red Riding Hood is on her way through the woods for a visit. She meets the wolf and he decides he will eat well today. Not so fast! Grandma has a trick up her sleeve. She can use Morse code to call for help, but she needs your students to assist her. Students will create two musical instruments to transmit their code. There is also the option to code sounds using Scratch.

If you are looking for a STEM activity that incorporates sound or programming, this one does both (if you do both options). This resource can also be used for the Hour of Code.

What You'll Get

  • Instructions and sample images
  • Introduction to Morse Code and follow up activity - this is a great pre-coding, unplugged activity that can be used for Hour of Code
  • 8-page story book to guide your students through the engineering design process
  • Data recording sheet
  • 3 bonus STEM challenges
  • Coloring pages
  • Rubric
  • Certificate of completion
  • Graphic organizers for students to retell, sequence, and contrast and compare fairy tales

What are STEM Tales?

STEM tales are a series of STEM challenges that are accessible for your youngest engineers; they use a fairy tale that your students are likely already familiar with. By adding in a story element, those students that might typically shy away from STEM activities may enjoy transporting themselves into a story to solve a problem.

What Teachers are Saying

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "This summer, my school held a virtual Summer Camp and I taught a STEM course. My co-teacher was our technology specialist. She was able to help with the Scratch Jr. portion as this program was new to me. The kids loved creating their instruments and learning about Morse Code. We provided the students with baggies of materials they could use for building and creating. They each had their own iPad they were allowed to check out to use for the Summer Camp. It was a lot of fun. I think I learned a lot myself!"

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "Although I couldn't be with my students when they did the activity, the feedback I've gotten from parents is positive. I used this with my second grade enrichment group as a follow-up to several code breaking/code creating activities. I loved the connection with a fairy tale -- very fun, and real Morse code, as well as the creative musical instrument activity. It really put a lot of things together to make an engaging learning activity. Thank you!"

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "This was so much fun!! Fit right in with our fairy tale unit! I'll be using it with my third graders next year, too!"
