Literacy Center Activities 2nd Grade - ABC Order, Blends, Contractions, Synonyms

These 11 literacy centers for Grade 2 can be used to teach the following: blends & digraphs, alphabetical order, homophones, synonyms and antonyms, nonfiction text features, contractions, vowel teams, sentence editing, and grammar. These fun language activities are perfect for centers, group work, or independent practice.

What's Included?

Nouns, Adjectives & Verbs Mystery Word Game

Students try to guess the "mystery word" on the card. There are a few clues given about the word (whether it is a noun, an adjective or a verb, how many letters it has, what it starts or ends with, etc.). Students play in groups of three. One student reads while the other students guess.

Sentence Editing (includes a Digital Version)

These worksheets, task cards, posters, strips, and short paragraph editing activities can help students edit for proper punctuation and capital letters.

Synonyms & Antonyms Activities

This packet contains fun activities and worksheets to help students learn about synonyms and antonyms. The match games can be played in small groups.

Vowel Teams Activities

This packet comes with posters, a few worksheets and a match game. It covers the following vowel teams: ai, ay, oa, oe, ow, ee, ea, ie, ue, ui.

Alphabetical Order (ABC Order) Center

This center comes with 30 word lists. Each list has a theme (e.g. sports, fall words, winter words, animals). There are ten words in each list.

Beginning Blends & Digraphs Strips

These strips can come in handy at your word work center. Laminate them and have students use them with dry erase markers to make words that start with common blends and digraphs.

Nonfiction Text Features Cut & Paste

This activity can help students identify nonfiction text features in short reading passages. It comes with 4 passages (dogs, cats, birds, & plants). Students cut out the text features word boxes and paste them directly onto the passage.

Contractions Activities & Worksheets

This packet includes worksheets, a match game, a crossword, a word search, task cards, and a quiz. Students will make 2 words into one by using apostrophes and also break contractions down into the 2 words that make them.

Homophones Activities

Use this fun match game with a penguin theme to reinforce homophones. There are also some worksheets included.
