What educators are saying

I like that this resource provides the cut outs for the students to be hands on and visually seeing the lines of symmetry. I also like the powerpoint, worksheets, and kahoots provided.
My students loved this resource. It really helped them to visualize the symmetry. Thank you for all your hard work in creating this resource!

Description

Symmetry is one of those very visual math topics that some students just “see” and others don’t. This set of shapes is designed to give students hands-on practice with finding lines of reflective symmetry (not to be confused with rotational symmetry).

What’s included:

  • 32 cut and fold shapes
  • Answer document
  • Answer key

Bonus materials included:

  • a google slideshow to introduce the topic
  • Math guided notes pages for introducing the skill
  • Kahoot game links to use for fun review.

How to use: To complete the activity, students simply fold each shape included along the dashed lines and then see if each side matches. If they do, then that represents a line of reflective symmetry. If not, the shape is not symmetrical in that way. After testing, students mark on the answer document all shapes that are symmetrical. Students can complete the activity as a whole class moving about the room (scoot activity), in a small math group, with a partner or as an independent center.

Standard covered - CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.G.A.3

Recognize a line of symmetry for a two-dimensional figure as a line across the figure such that the figure can be folded along the line into matching parts. Identify line-symmetric figures and draw lines of symmetry.
