Description

This worksheet covers the Lincoln-Douglas debates, a series of debates held from August to October 1858 between Republican Abraham Lincoln and Democrat Stephen A. Douglas. At the time, the two were campaigning for the office of United States Senator from Illinois.

A PDF worksheet, a link to download the worksheet in Google Slides, an optional worksheet with ten multiple-choice questions, and a link to download the questions as a Google Form are all included.

The worksheet is divided into six sections:

  • Overview
  • Background - Stephen A. Douglas
  • Background - Abraham Lincoln
  • Before the Debates
  • The Debates
  • The Election

At the end of the worksheet, there is one extended response question for students: "Although he lost the senate election in 1858, explain how Abraham Lincoln benefited from the debates with Stephen A. Douglas. Use details from the text to support your answer!"
