Two mini books for teaching the NGSS science unit on Light and Sound.

What is Sound?
Sound is all around you. Stop and listen. What can you hear?
You hear sound by using your ears.
Your ears catch the sound and send messages to your brain.
Your brain tells you what you are hearing.
Sounds are made by vibrations. These vibrations are called sound waves.
Sound waves that move faster have a higher pitch like the squeak of a mouse.
Sound waves that move slower have a lower pitch like the roar of a lion.
Volume is how loud or soft something is.
A whisper is a quiet sound. It is made by small vibrations.
A scream is a loud sound. It is made by big vibrations.
You can make sounds using your body. Touch your neck and hum.
Did you feel the vibrations?
You use speech sounds to communicate with other people by talking.

What is Light?
We get light from the sun. The lifht from the sun keeps us warm.
Light helps you see the world around you.
Light comes from a source. Sources of light can be natural or artificial.
Natural light comes from nature or it makes its own light. Fire is natural light.
Artificial light is made by someone. It needs a battery or electricity to work.
A lamp is artificial light.
Light travels in a path called a ray.
The path is straight.
Earth blocks the light from the sun.
One side is day and the other side is night. That is a shadow.
Some things let light pass through. A glass can be transparent.
Some things only let a little light through. A curtain is translucent.
Some things don't let any light through. A rock is opaque.
When light hits an object it reflects the light, or bounces off it.
Our eyes catch light rays as they bounce around. They are like a camera.
Your eyes send messages to your brain. Your brain thinks about what you saw.
